"One more chance is all I really need . . . ."
The words from Tim Harwill Pruden's song could be a slogan for many
singer-songwriters. On Thursday, Kamloops audiences get their first chance
to listen to his tales.
Pruden, a native of Manitoba,
will be playing at the Grind Coffee House, 705 Victoria St.,
starting at 8 p.m., with special guest John Peterson.
Harwill, the son of an Irish-Canadian Second World War veteran and a Cree
mother, grew up raising horses with his father in the Interlake district
of Manitoba, near the Peguis Indian Reserve.
He left home at 15, spending times as a professional boxer in between
stints as lead vocalist with different cover bands.
Just before he turned 29, he made a strong move toward music, joining the
Society of Composers and Artists of Canada. Since then, Pruden has
expanded his catalogue to more than 100 songs of his own creation. He
tries to combine straightforward melodies with intelligently crafted
lyrics that tell a story.
In 1998, he released Harwill - Spinner of Tales, his first CD. Reviewing
it, the Edmonton Journal said, "Pruden's reflections on love, ambition,
his origins and past experiences have complexity and charm," while Vue
Weekly called it "definitely appealing . . . the sincerity is obvious."
It's a sincerity he brings to his live shows as well. His current tour
will see him singing not just from Spinner of Tales, but also new songs
from an upcoming album.
As he moves further into his career, his musical sensibilities and
songwriting continue to evoke the image of the truth as he understands it,
drawing on the life he has led and is continuing to lead.
